About the Author: Derek W. Frisby is a middle Tennessee native, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned his doctorate in history. He is an associate professor of Global Studies and Cultural Geography at Middle Tennessee State University, where he teaches courses on Tennessee history, military geography, and global warfare and culture. Professor Frisby also leads staff rides and tours of Tennessee Civil War battlefields, and he conducts courses on warfare and public memory in such diverse places as Iwo Jima, Peleliu, Guam, Europe, and Vietnam.
