Brandeis Fields is a country lawyer doing his best to fly under the radar and maintain a family life. He is conscientious and understated. When a local mayor's daughter is found strangled to death, Brandeis is asked to defend the accused. A high-profile murder case is the last job he wants to take, but circumstances have deemed otherwise. Now, Brandeis is stuck with a case he doesn't want, defending a client he doesn't like, and he can't seem to figure out if he cares if the defendant is guilty.
