A facsimile of the Bodleian Library copy of a 1489 printing of Tristan, the moving legend which influenced numerous medieval writers and artists. The tales of the tragic loves of Tristan, nephew of King Marc of Cornwall, and Iseult, wife of King Marc and daughter of the King of Ireland, were first related in French verse towards the end of the twelfth century. This moving legend exercised a remarkable influence on the imagination of writers and artists in the Middle Ages. Printed by Jehan le Bourgoys in 1489. This is the editio princeps of the Prose Tristan. The present facsimile is a reproduction in the original size of the copy in the Bodleian Library (shelfmark: Douce 224).
