Lives Remembered is an unusual collection of shtetl photographs. starting in the 1890's, and continuing right up to the outbreak of World War II, Zalman Kaplan, a photographer in the town(shtetl)of Szczuczyn, Poland took thousands of images. Kaplan was a town photographer in Szczuczyn. Thus his photos capture an intimacy with his subjects, the town and its people, that only a fellow inhabitant could achieve. At the same time, the images present us with a transect through time in a single shtetl as it rapidly moved toward modenity.
