He was President of the International Society of Family Law from 1985 to 1988 and a founding co-editor of The International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family. He is co-director of Oxford Centre for Family Law and Policy, and a Fellow of the British Academy. He has researched and written extensively, especially in family law. Rob George is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in Law at University College, Oxford, and an Associate Member of Harcourt Chambers, Temple, London. He researches primarily in family law and policy, and is the author of Ideas and Debates in Family Law (2012) and Relocation Disputes: Law and Practice in England and New Zealand (2014).
