Excerpt from Stead's Review of Reviews: September 21, 1918 This certainly suggests that though at tirst the Germans were badly surprised and defeated, their retreat since has been no more of a debacle than it was in 1917. We have followed more quickly. Their plans for retirement have not been carried out so well. But there is no panic now being shown. Our continued advance has chwred us all greatly, but what I am trying to show is that once retreat had been compelled. And retirement decided 011 by the enemy High Command. We were no longer driving the enemy back by superior forces. By cleverer tactics. But were merely endeavouring to harry their systematic re treat as much as possible. We are not lost now witnessing anything which justifies us in saying that we have the enemv beaten. The test will come when the Germans reach the lines on which they propose to stand - the Hindenburg line. Or maybe one east of it. Until we have demonstrated that we can continue to force the Germans back after they have decided to stand firm. We certainly should be wrong in ssuming that we had them beaten.
