Kinman has library and law degrees. Jill Cogen was born in Cleveland, Ohio and currently lives in Studio City, California. She received her master of library science and a Ph.D. in history from UCLA. She is retired from the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, where she served as the institution's reference librarian. She is currently a researcher in American naval history at the library.
