His wife was in an Irish asylum and Mary acted as stepmother to his children. They later married and had six more children. She was a prolific author of more than 80 books. Braddon also wrote supernatural fiction, including Gerald, or the World, the Flesh and the Devil (1891) and ghost stories "The Cold Embrace", "Eveline's Visitant" and "At Chrighton Abbey".
