She was living with John Maxwell, a periodicals publisher who was already married with five children - scandoulous for the 1860s. His wife was in an Irish asylum and Mary acted as stepmother to his children. They later married and had six more children. She was a prolific author of more than 80 books. "Lady Audley's Secret (1862) won her recognition and a fortune. Braddon also wrote supernatural fiction, including Gerald, or the World, the Flesh and the Devil (1891) and ghost stories "The Cold Embrace", "Eveline's Visitant" and "At Chrighton Abbey". Braddon founded Belgravia magazine (1866), which published serialised sensation novels, biographies, fashion and science news.
