Bartosh graduated from Metropolitan State College in Denver in 1971 with a B. A. degree in Psychology. John, 66, was successful in the retail furniture business for over 30 years and held various management positions along the way. John began is career in 1971 with Homestead House, a 4-store Ethan Allen chain based in Denver. John's five years with that highly respected and publicly trusted company rewarded him with considerable business knowledge and insight into "people management"--expertise that he would carry with him and pass along to others in many future employment positions. From 1977 through 1980, John worked as a store manager and as a management-training manager for Big Sur Waterbeds, a Denver-based waterbed retailer that later became Furniture Row Companies. In 1977, Big Sur Waterbeds was a one-store, financially struggling organization on the verge of bankruptcy. With John's experience and savvy with leadership skills and recognizing the need for first-class customer-service policies, by mid 1980, the company had eight profitable Big Sur Waterbeds' stores throughout Colorado. The original store, which John managed and from which he trained all of the company's other store managers, was on pace to exceed $2.6 million in sales volume for the year--an almost inconceivable figure for a store limited to about 8,000 square feet. Near the end of October in 1980, John was fired for not accepting a promotion to be the company's out-of-state management-training manager. Right before he was fired, founder & CEO Barney Visser said, "John, I don't completely understand what makes you tick, but you are the best leader of people that I have ever seen." Now, with 330 stores, nationwide, Furniture Row Companies is one of the largest, privately owned, retail-furniture companies in the world. Barney Visser's personal net worth exceeds $200 million. John is proud to know that he played a most pivotal, instrumental part in what has turned out to be one of the most successful, independently owned, business ventures, if not also one of the most remarkable, personal, "rags to riches" stories, in American history. Through the years, John has been referred to by business owners, co-workers and friends as an individual who has special talent for dealing with people. His learned leadership skills and writing abilities have inspired business colleagues, managers, self-improvement-book readers and others throughout America and elsewhere.
