Ajax is likely the earliest Sophocles play to survive. It fills a gap in Homer's epics' narrative, discussing the events that befell Ajax between the Iliad and the Odyssey. In the play, Achilles' armor is awarded to Odysseus instead of Ajax, throwing the latter into a murderous rage. The play deals with the attempts of the hero to purify himself of his violent sins.
