In Book 3, "The Holy Wars", the family continues to thrive as Poland lives in a rare time of Peace. The family's representatives in foreign lands continue to make new friends and adventures. In 1103, Boleslaw III unites the entire family under one name 'Andruszkowicz' and dubs Damian, Pawel, Bartolmiej and Tomasz Counts of Poland. This fuels the next generation to do greater deeds of valor for their country and family. It is a time when the Christian and the Muslim worlds are in conflict. Young Bartolmiej forges a new friendship with the Diaz family of Vivar. As the young son's instructor he helps to forge a new leader and savior of Spain known as the Cid. Thirteen of the family's next generation joins the Crusade. These few Polish representatives to the Holy Crusades in Palestine were sent not to conquer, but to rescue family and friends, Christians, Jews and Muslims, from the violent hands of the Frank and German Crusaders as they lay siege to Jerusalem. Two young Polish women warriors are among the Polish contingent to the Holy Land and fight as or even more fiercely than their male counterparts. Two unlikely romances develop amidst all of the violence and fighting; one ends in happiness and the other in tragedy.
