Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy or surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a surface-sensitive technique that enhances Raman scattering by molecules adsorbed on rough metal surfaces or by nanostructures. Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is an approach to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) in which enhancement of Raman scattering occurs only at the point of a near atomically sharp pin, typically coated with gold. Both of these techniques can be used to study the properties of catalysts as well as other materials. This book provides a succinct overview of methods in Plasmon Enhanced Spectroscopy and how they can be applied to Catalysis research. Beginning with a look at the theory behind the techniques the book then goes into a practical and hands-on description of the various methods.About the Author: Prof. Bert Weckhuysen obtained his PhD in 1995 from Leuven University (Belgium) under the supervision of prof. Robert Schoonheydt in the field of spectroscopy of solid catalysts. He conducted two postdoctoral stays in the USA; in the groups of prof. Israel Wachs at Lehigh University and of prof. Jack Lunsford at Texas A&M University. In 2000, he became full professor at the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Research at Utrecht University, where he has worked on the development and use of different spectroscopy and microscopy methods to investigate catalytic solids under reaction conditions, focusing on connecting nano- and microscale events to the macroworld of catalyst activity, selectivity and stability. His work has been recognized by many national and international awards, he is an elected member of the KNAW, KVAB & Academia Europaea and is currently President of the European Federation of Catalysis Societies (EFCATS).
