This highly illustrated addition to Arcturus' Great Artists series introduces the work of a unique figure in the history of art: Hieronymus Bosch. Famous for his apocalyptic, nightmarish and dreamlike visions of heaven and hell, Bosch's work was deeply rooted in the religion and folklore of the 15th century. However, with an incredibly fertile imagination, Bosch went beyond anything produced before him to create works of great originality which reveal to us something of the deepest fears and hopes of his times. 2016 was the 500th anniversary of Bosch's death, resulting in the publication of much new scholarly research into his life and work and several important monographic exhibitions. This book presents the highlights of that new research and understanding of Bosch's life and oeuvre to a non-scholarly audience in a highly illustrated, accessible book.
