Beginning with anecdotes from his boyhood in a Yorkshire town, and ending with a moving account of his wife's death, this is the story of a life that has been lived to the full. It is a story told with great honesty, of a life complete with all its ups and downs - problems with the author's transport business, problems with money and with illness. All sorts of vivid and memorable characters pass through the story, drawn with the skill of a fine raconteur. There is the author's grandmother, Mary Ann, in her apron, always quarrelling with her husband; there is Mr Knowles, or Slimey, the schoolmaster with his two-foot long cane; later on there is Scout, the manic guard dog. But above all there is the author's wife, Eileen, and this book is in large part a tribute to a long and happy marriage.
