After apprenticeship, the author joined the Nigeria Regiment in 1939, and describes the East Africa campaign of 1940-1941. Returning to civil duty in 1942, he was posted to the remote, conservative sheikdom of Bornu, near Lake Chad, Maiduguri, capital of Bornu. After leave in 1944, the author returned with his wife and was posted on a station on the upper reaches of the River Benue. Twenty-five years later, he returned to Nigeria briefly, as director of an international company, and found enormous change in the environment, the political, economic and social scene, such as to leave him with deep unease.About the Author: Trevor Kerslake joined the Colonial Service in Nigeria in 1937 and served as an administrative officer in the provinces of Katsina, Bornu and Adamawa, on Nigeria's northern fringe. From 1939 to 1942 he was an infantry officer with the Nigeria Regiment and was closely involved with the surrender of Italian authority in Mogadishu, Harar and Addis Ababa. He resigned from the Colonial Service in1946 but returned briefly to Nigeria in 1972 as a director of Guinness and describes the experience in the final chapter of his book. Since retiring, he has lived in ruralOxfordshire where his interests include conservation, music and gardening.
