Norbert originated as a tropical wave, developed into a tropical depression on October 3, and into a tropical storm the next day. Norbert ultimately rapidly intensified to a major hurricane-Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale-on October 8. It continued to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane before weakening making landfall in Baja California Sur as a Category 2 hurricane on October 11. Norbert then crossed into the Gulf of California and hit Sonora as a Category 1 hurricane. Norbert dissipated on the morning of October 12. Norbert claimed 25 lives with three people missing and caused $716.4 million in damages (2008 USD) throughout Mexico, with the worst damage in Baja California Sur and Álamos, Sonora.
