The ancient craft of macramé is thought to have its roots in the Middle East, when Arab weavers in the 13th century created ornate fringes out of rope for their horses and camels in part to ward off flies in the sweltering desert heat of north Africa. The word "macramé" is believed to have originated from the Arabic word for fringe used by weavers, migramah. In the Victorian era and again in the 1970s, when hanging plant containers were all the rage, macramé made a comeback as a DIY craze. Macramé has recently seen another renaissance, this time with a new, contemporary twist.
