This is a heartbreaking and eye-opening memoir of an Eritrean refugee separated from his family by war and circumstances beyond his control.After the narrator's wife and first daughter leave for America for medical reasons and don't come back to their homeland, Yikealo must find a way to get himself and his daughter there, too, but his country won't let him leave. He is considered into the service for years, forced to do hard labor for pennies, and oppressed, he finally manages to get his second daughter out. But then he himself slips across the border illegally and finds a way to reuniting with his wife after seven years apart.It is a heart-wrenching story, hard to read. But, only by reading it, one can understand the proud people of Eritrea leaving their homeland.
